Four Lakeside students have invented a device that could possibly help local anglers.
Bobby Hannah, Austen Scroggins, Page Williams and Tray Mullis, all juniors at Lakeside, are semi-finalists in the Nucor “Strength of Steel Challenge.” The competition encourages youth ages 12 to 18 from throughout the United States to design inventions from recycled steel. The contest is sponsored by Nucor, American Buildings’ parent company.
The Lakeside students’ invention is called the “Save-A-Rod.” The invention saves fishing rods from being trapped and damaged in a truck tailgate.
“(The device) attaches to the side of your truck and holds your fishing rod (securely) on the truck,” says Hannah. “It keeps your fishing rods up off your tailgate and also keeps them from sliding around in your truck bed.”
Inspiration came to the four boys during a recent fishing trip.
“Every time (Page and Tray) would open their tailgate, the poles would come sliding out of the truck. We wanted to make something to solve this problem – to save the rods and the truck. And the Save-A-Rod was born,” says Hannah.
According to contest rules, the invention had to support at least 5 pounds. The Save-A-Rod supports approximately 40 pounds.
